Hehe, fools. Every single one of them. It was so easy to take what she wanted that it was almost insane. So trusting were they of a charming young girl that they would just turn there backs long enough for her to steal the supplies she needed which was mostly food with a few medical supplies thrown in. Wouldn't her father be proud?
Making sure that she was hidden in a little alcove on the red beach she began to took off her cloak to reveal her form in all of its dark-furred, yellow ringed glory. In the moonlight she felt the most secure and the strongest, it lent her strength and she felt nigh invincible. The only creatures floating around here at this time of night were the ghost types who she had zero fear of. She was no soft city pokemon, after all. Where she came from ghosts were the least of your worries.
After the female took the cloak from her body and laid it on the ground the fruits of her labor showed. Three apples and a lum berry fell from the pockets of the cloak. The umbreon gave a wide-toothed grin that exposed her sharp fangs. She'd run a few forays to the city but never had she actually stolen anything before, this was her first heist but it certainly wouldn't be her last. It was much too fun to take from the rich and give to the... well... they weren't exactly poor, not yet. However, with winter about to come in food would be harder and harder to find so it was important that they stock up with all they could get so her runs to the city were invaluable.
The umbreon began to bundle her cloak up and prepared to tote everything back to the Wilds. It should be simple enough to edge around the outskirts of the city while everyone was sleeping. After all, no one had seen her... right? For some reason the umbreon felt as a stab of trepidation... What if she'd been followed? It was better to be safe than sorry so she dimmed her rings until it appeared that she had none at all then she peeked around the corner of the alcove, icy eyes peering about. Surely with her skills she wouldn't have been followed... right?

It was a pretty average night. The light breeze was cool, and the moon was waxing. This evening, Etude was bored. This was evident due to the fact was out about town, doing her act of wandering around, helping anyone who may need it and looking for, or rather to stop, trouble. For the past ten minutes, this meant helping an old lady close up her windows for the night, like the gallade was checking off a list of deeds that prove you’re a good character. Waving to the old Unfezant, Etude wished her a good night and set back out into hers.
As her eyes were adjusting from coming away from the light, she saw someone approaching. The young charmeleon, whom Etude recognized as a worker from the nearby clinic, was in what could only be described as an angry panic.
“Grams!” He shouted, louder than he should at this time of night. “Those food preserves you sent this morning, half of ‘em are gone, and some of our medical supplies with them!”
“And shouting at me is going to magically bring them back?” The old unfezant, poking her head out of her door, said sweetly with a hint of spice.
The chameleon scratched his chin and looked down to the left. His cheeks were bright. “N-No, I just, I’m not sure what to do.”
It was at this point Etude stepped in. The chameleon explained the situation, how the supply room of the clinic appeared to have been raided, and brought the gallade back to the scene. Assuring the worried pokemon that it’d be fine, she told him to go to bed and file a report in the morning. She’d take it from there.
Etude surveyed the scene. Things were missing, that was certain. But as far as thieveries went, this one was surprisingly clean. The door had been left unlocked, meaning there was no need to break in, but even then, the only evidence Etude could find to the culprit was (after much searching) a light set of footprints.
The night suddenly got much more interesting. She’d need to be fast if she had any hope of catching up with them. Flipping her white cape around to the black stealth side, Etude took off at a jog, slowly gaining speed as she followed the tracks, leaving her own circular footprints behind.
The prints weren’t always easy to follow; once or twice she had to search the environment for other signs of passage, but overall, Etude made good time. In fact, she arrived on the ledge overlooking the beach just in time to see a set of golden rings suddenly darken. Etude paused, eyes following the dark shape. There were no other pokemon about. Chances were high that whoever that was down there, they were the thief.
The gallade made her move. She lept from the cliff, landing softly in the cool sand. Waves washed onto shore on her right.
“Hold on,” Etude called to, judging by the rings, the umbreon, who was then about fifty feet away. The gallade began to walk swiftly towards them. “Can I ask you a few questions about those items you’ve got there?”

For a moment as the umbreon looked around she saw nothing. Smug confidence filled her body as she scoffed to herself. Of course she hadn't been followed, she was too crafty for that. Why, those silly city-folk probably hadn't even noticed any of their supplies missing. The rings began to glow again as the umbreon turned and began to gather up her supplies.
“Hold on,” She froze, fur along her spine raising at the authoritative voice. So she had been followed. “Can I ask you a few questions about those items you’ve got there?” Shit! Shit! Shit! So it looked like her first heist had been noticed. A rising tide of panic began to flood her gut, replacing the cockiness that had swirled in earlier. What would she do now? Cool... She had to keep cool. If she panicked and ran then the other pokemon would give chase, she had to think. What could she do? Fight? The umbreon turned, a cool smile on her face despite the rising fear in her belly. No. She couldn't fight. That was a gallade and as confident as she was in her abilities fighting type attacks hurt. She needed another strategy... Run? No... There was no telling what sort of tricks that thing had up its sleeve. No. If she wanted a chance at fighting or at running she would have to put on some sort of front. In an instant she knew exactly what to do.
The umbreon took a step towards the gallade, allowing herself to easily be walked up to. Nonchalance and friendliness, she would need to feign those for this plan to work. This wasn't just a gallade, after all, she recognized the mayor of the city. This gal would probably see through anything less than a five star performance. "Hello there, why, of course you can." The umbreon stepped to the side to give the gallade a clear view of the items wrapped in the cloak. Self-consciously she began to wiggle the toes in her glove. Arceus! That stupid thing sure was itchy... especially when she was nervous. She spoke to take the focus off of it. "Is there something wrong with my supplies? Are they bad? Gee, it would be awful terrible if I took my sick mother and sisters bad supplies..." Her voice was innocent, pretending to be the do-gooder that she was not.

The umbreon didn’t run at Etude’s calling, which was in some ways a relief. In another, if this pokemon lived up to the likelihood of her being the thief, the gallade knew exactly what was coming next.
The two came within talking distance and, innocently, the umbreon laid out her bundle. Etude scanned the items, running over in her head what the charmeleon had said were gone. It was all there; food, medical items.
And there it was, the nice girl act. She was decently convincing too, if only she hadn’t landed on two oh so common cliches. First, the sick family. Then, of course, there was the fact that the items the umbreon had on her were suspiciously like those which had gone missing.
“I don’t supposed you thought it was a bad time to be getting supplies right now, with it being night and whatnot. There’s plenty of bad pokemon that would love to steal such nice goods as these.” Etude said in an equally nonchalant tone. “There’s also a clinic in town, you know. It can be expensive, but that’s what community is for, isn’t it?”
It was pretty obvious that the umbreon was the guilty party. She wondered, though, if the bit about sick family was true - if so, it was impossible for the umbreon to not know about the clinic in town. There’d have to be a reason for stealing. The most likely solution was that the girl had ties with an outlaw or wild pokemon of some sort, and was likely one herself. Though, Etude had never seen or heard of this umbreon before. Many questions occurred to her, but only one mattered at present; what she would do on confrontation?
Etude gave the umbreon a smile not unlike the one the old lady gave the charmeleon. “How about I escort you back to town? We can get everything sorted out there.”

The umbreon waited while the gallade went over her items. Perhaps she would get away scott-free and the gallade would simply allow her to continue on her way with the sob story. "It crossed my mind, yes. But, you know, it's a curse being an umbreon. I'm much more happy going out to get items at night than in the blazing sunlight even if there's a greater risk in doing so." The umbreon's eyes were on the items but in her periphery she studied the gallade. Was her ploy going over or was she being played in turn? The dilemma of a thief. "But we're a very poor family... I'm not even sure if the whole entire community could help us or if the clinic would see us." Here her voice took on a rueful tone as she took a look towards the sky as if she were contemplating how life could be so cruel.
At her impromptu companion's next words her ears twitched and she could feel a touch of annoyance. Was this more of the overly kind city folk hospitality? Or was she only offering to take her in so she could throw her in jail? Either way she couldn't accept it. Seven needed to be on her way, her father would be waiting. "Thank-you but I don't want to waste any more of your time. Me'n'my family live on the outskirts of town, it's a really long walk from here I assure you and I'd really just like to be back on my own, if I can." The umbreon took a casual step towards the items, easily as if she were just meandering in a random direction. However, her mind was far from random... She wanted to get closer to her goods and get a clear shot at the gallade if things went sour here. There was plenty of sand around so plenty of opportunity for her to blast her with it. "Sorted? But... But what needs to be sorted?" Her eyes went wide with feigned worry as she stared up at the mayor. "Please, I just need to get back to my family... I don't understand why it's so much trouble." Her large ears lowered to either side of her head as if she was afraid or worried that something was wrong. Perhaps if she could get the gallade to feel guilty she would buzz off.
Ugh, she hated playing so submissive but that would probably work out better in the long run. Still, she began to dig her gloved paw into the sand. Readying her attack if things went badly.

The umbreon was still playing the part of an innocent, with a poor, sick family to boot. While her acting did improve as she went on, Etude gave her that, it wasn’t enough to weigh against the counter evidence.
Crossing her arms, Etude said, “Really, I’m sorry to bother you, but your story doesn’t check out.” She lifted a single finger up and her tone of voice shifted from that of a kind lady to one of authority. “The day may be hot, but not nearly enough to stop you from shopping. Otherwise shopkeepers wouldn’t be able stand being out in the market all day. Your worry may come from the reputations of dark types, but our guild has plenty of unusual adventurers. Those at the market don’t care.” The gallade’s voice got lower. As she spoke, she took a few steps around the other pokemon as if to flank her with the town in the distance. “Second, we’re a dangerous distance from town as it is. How far into the outskirts does your family live, exactly? If they're sick, why have you not sought out medical help? And lastly, I don’t recognize you.” Etude knew a few other umbreons, and in comparison, this young lady was rather small. Under her one eye was a distinguishing line of dots. No, she would have remembered meeting this umbreon before.
Still, it wasn’t a terrible story. She’d heard far more ridiculous excuses. The umbreon also had never appeared on any wanted posters, reports, or any other forum. Before this evening, Etude hadn’t the slightest idea of this pokemon’s existence, and if not for the robbery, she’d have no reason to suspect her. Under different circumstances, she’d be inclined to believe the umbreon.
The gallade was frowning. “I neglected to mention my own reasons for being out here. Earlier this evening, a number of supplies were stolen from the town’s clinic. Now, in seeing your bag,” She motioned to the sack, “not only do you have items matching what I was told was missing, but the footprints I found outside lead me here to you.” She took a step closer to the umbreon. “What I’m saying is, I’m pretty certain you’re the thief.” The accusation was not harsh in tone, but in that of someone coming to a simple conclusion.
It occurred to Etude that she could have just started with that and gotten on with it. Now, the ball was in the other’s court. If the stars had aligned just wrong and this was not the culprit, then the two of them had just gotten seriously unlucky.

The umbreon's head raised sharply as that finger was raised in her direction. The gallade's tone of voice completely changed as she began to relay what exactly dictated what was wrong with her story. The umbreon's eyes began to narrow more and more as the gallade went on to explain to her the holes in her made-up story. Her eyes began to narrow so much that it turned into a full-blown glare as she looked up at the mayor. "But you can't possibly know every single umbreon in this city, can you?" Her voice was low as well. The jig was up. Her story had had too many holes poked into it. However, she wasn't going to run... not yet. Perhaps something could be salvaged. Maybe she could spin her tale into something else entirely?
But no...
That gallade just had to go on. Footprints, eh? Next time she would have to be more careful but she was still learning. It was a good thing she'd worn her glove though, or else her most distinguishing feature would have been noticed. For a moment the umbreon was quiet after the gallade finished speaking. It might have seemed like she was admitting defeat and was going to give up the supplies or go quietly... "You're quite the detective... I commend you for that..."
Anyone who thought that didn't know Sevenclaw.
"But that doesn't mean you WIN!" Right as she shouted the words "win" the umbreon used the paw that she had been digging into the sand to throw a hefty load of the grain at the gallade. Hopefully it would go straight into her eyes for a well-aimed sand-attack but she couldn't be too particular about that. Now that she'd thrown the sand she needed to get it in gear. In one swift movement she lowered her head and scooped the supplies up in her cloak and skirted around the gallade. Then, away she dashed down the beach.
The pokemon dimmed her rings into non-existence as she attempted to blend into the shadows. If she could she would skirt around the outskirts of the city, using buildings and plants to hide her, but that was supposing that the gallade didn't catch her or use some dirty trick to trip her up.

Now, it’d been awhile since Etude had last gone on a chase. The past few weeks had been both peaceful and busy, what with the angry salesman from out of town (who couldn’t sell his overpriced goods and needed someone to get angry at. For several days.), a small house fire, quickly put out, thank arceus, and a bug going through the oran berries (which was both a disease, and then, as they later found, also some wild bug pokemon). And there was that long-lasting chill between two pie sellers, that just last week escalated into a very messy fist fight. It’d been a busy month, but one basically devoid of real outlaws. So, finally getting to go out like this was a long over-due change of pace for Etude.
It was also the reason she didn’t react to the sudden ball of sand to the face. It was the oldest trick in the book; she’d been sand attacked so many times one would think dodging it would be second nature. Instead, the gallade was taken entirely unaware, and took a lob of ground to the eyes.
The reactionary jump backwards happened after the attack had already landed itself in her eyes. Etude could hear the umbreon’s departing footsteps in the sand as the gallade wiped the sand from her face. By the time her vision was clearing, the umbreon had gotten some good distance on her. With her rings dimmed, the night seemed to swallow the umbreon, leaving Etude only with the movement of the black furred pokemon to rely on.
“Hah, you think you can outrun me? You are new!” Etude called, flinging her cape to the ground. Taking a deep breath, the gallade gave chase. Each of her steps were wide, moving her several feet with each strong stride, focusing on length to minimise the sinking of the sand. But would be naught to catch up with the umbreon if she couldn’t see her.
The move psycho cut was not a move that could affect a dark type like the umbreon. That type was naturally immune to anything psychic. So, the power focused while she ran, and shot out in three solid blade-like waves, was not meant to harm the umbreon. The move, shot high, flew quite a ways down the beach before the three strikes buried themselves in the ground. The impact forced a burst of sand into the air. Elbow blades extended and slowly glowing purple in preparation for her next attack, Etude hoped that would be enough to delay the other and allow her to fight in closer quarters.

Since the gallade hadn't been right after her right off the bat the umbreon could only assume that her sand attack had worked. However, it wouldn't work forever. She needed a good plan of escape. The sand wasn't the easiest to run in but she had four paws to power her along rather than just two clumsy ones. Puh... Two-legged pokemon, how did they even do anything? Her icy eyes scanned the horizon in front of her. The city was coming up quickly but there was still a few yards of sand between her and the shadows of the buildings. That was when a sudden explosion of sand rose up in her face. "Breon!" She growled out in dismay as the sand showered over her body and most importantly her face. In the confusion of grit she accidentally dropped her baggage on the ground while she shoved her rear to the ground so she could skid to a halt. Swiftly and with some irritation she used one paw to scrub the sand from her eyes so she could see again.
Then, she gave her entire pelt a shake which sprayed sand in every direction. By now she was certain that the gallade had caught her up. Another distraction would be needed to ensure that she could make another getaway. The sand would probably be expected so she would have to try something else. The umbreon turned partway around side displayed to make herself look larger as she puffed out her fur, arched her back, flattened her ears, bared her fangs with narrowed eyes, and from her parted mouth she let out an earsplitting Screech. This gallade was not getting those supplies back, they were hers now! Finders keeper and all that shizz. True... She hadn't really found it as much as she she'd snuck in an stolen it but those were mere details. Not very important to a wild pokemon like herself.
Her attack she hoped would cause some distraction in the gallade enough for her to hopefully grab her supplies --which she was slowly edging towards with her body still turned sideways in an intimidating display-- and make another break for it. "Back off, softie! You don't want none of me! I promise you that!" Closer and closer she went to the supplies while her icy eyes remained on the gallade, watching in case something went wrong or was thrown her way.

With the delay caused by her attack, Etude managed to catch up with the dark type, at least to the point at which she could again make out the other’s form. Her charge came to a halt about fifteen feet away. The screech, only amplified by the night, sliced through the silence. The noise was loud and distracting enough to bring the gallade to a sudden stop, her prepared poison jab dissipating as she raised her hands to block out the sound.
She gave a moment of pause to let the attack end. In response to the umbreon’s ready stance, Etude widened her own and raised her arms in preparation for battle or a block. The supplies had fallen to the ground. Etude had to get them back - this wasn’t just a matter of principle, riding on the fact that stealing was wrong. The clinic was understocked as it was. More and more pokemon were getting sick, and while those citizens were prioritized, the town as a whole was not exactly well off. The loss of medical supplies meant someone went without treatment. The loss of food meant someone went hungry. Etude knew it was like this everywhere - she wouldn’t be surprised if this umbreon’s family was indeed facing the same problems. But Etude had a duty to her people, and she would fulfill it.
But that didn’t mean she couldn’t enjoy the fight. The gallade grinned and tilted her head to one side. “Softy?” Etude called with a chuckle. “Dear, how long have you been stealing? It’s on your poor luck that I was the one to catch up with you.” Etude’s extended blades began again to glow a rich purple. The umbreon was attempting to move slowly towards the supplies. As if she was going to let her run off with them so easily!
The sand slowed what would normally be a swift lunge to a speed that was more likely to be dodged than hit. The goal, again, was not necessarily to injure the pokemon, but to keep her from running off with the bag as she threatened. Etude made a u-like shape, taking one long stride toward the strewn bag before turning back on the umbreon, so that if the pokemon did not react fast enough, the attack would come from about a forty-five degree angle from the bag. Regardless of if she were hitting air or not, the move was prepared and the action locked in. Etude released the poison jab, creating a flurry of punches tipped with an edge of poison. Now in close range, Etude wondered if the umbreon would live up to her claims of being oh so tough.

How long had she been stealing, really? Today? She'd gone on a couple of runs with her mentor before but she'd never done anything herself until today. Pst... How unlucky could she get? No no no. She couldn't be negative. There was no way this stupid gallade was going to ruin her supply run. Her father was expecting her to do good, especially for the upcoming winter! She couldn't afford to fail. "Y'know... You could just make this easy on both of us and just beat it. You soft city pokemon have more than enough food, I'm sure." The umbreon took one step towards the food, and another... And she would have made a break for it if not for the gallade's speedy movements. The pokemon lunged at her with a purple tipped, extended blade. Unless she wanted to be hit she had to act fast.
Being so small the umbreon was easily able to leap out of the way with a couple of inches to spare. However, this put her away from the bag which was no an ideal position. The umbreon bared her fangs in irritation. Great, just great. Locked in close range with a fighting type, how nice was this? The small pokemon didn't have long to think on this because the next series of attacks came in rapid succession. They were a flurry of poison-tipped punches that the umbreon tried to duck and weave to dodge. It worked for a little while until she made one trip up and was caught in the chest by one of the punches. The blow itself wasn't too awful, it was just the stab of toxic pain that caused her to hiss. Instead of trying to stand up to the blow Sevenclaw allowed herself to buckle under it. Her forelegs collapsed and her chest hit the ground along with her head. She was in close range and she had a specific attack that could use the leverage. This move in question was a close range feint attack.
She played dead for a moment, eyes half closed until in one swoop she launched herself at the gallade. Her head was tucked and right shoulder pushed forward as she attempted to knock the pokemon away from the bag and herself with the blow.

The umbreon had surprising agility, to be so close to the gallade yet avoid her punches. Etude struck nothing, each punch hitting air. Then, one well aimed punch, one slip from the umbreon, and she felt contact. The umbreon flew backward. Etude took and deep breath and let the move drop. The purple on her fists faded back to green. She raised her arms again, ready to continue the fight. The umbreon didn’t get up.
“Come now, I didn’t hit you that hard.” Etude called. But the umbreon just laid there. Her shoulders and stance relaxed. It couldn’t be that easy, no. This umbreon was fast, and strong enough to lift all those supplies; Etude doubted a single attack could do her in, especially a light-hitting one like it had been. The umbreon was likely preparing a sort of fake out, to draw her in for a sudden attack. Such a tactic wasn’t particularly common, but Etude had seen it used enough to know what it was.
She’d see what the umbreon had in store. If the umbreon was indeed inexperienced as she had guessed, the tactics she’d used thus far were quite impressive. She hoped the other wouldn’t let her down.
Pacing toward the pokemon, Etude said, “Not enough to give out freebies. The town isn’t as well off-” The umbreon’s feint attack came quickly enough the gallade didn’t have time to react. Well placed, the move hit Etude in the chest. The fighting type in her kept the attack from being devastating, but some of the air was forced from her lungs. She attempted to brace herself against the force of the attack, but couldn’t The gallade simply didn’t have the weight to her to keep herself in place. The blow sent her skidding back several feet, the sand further providing little traction for her.
The umbreon was now several feet closer to the supplies than Etude was. Why did this have to happen on the beach? The umbreon’s four legs gave her the advantage in speed here. But, as she stood up and regained her balance, Etude felt new power surge through her. The dark type move fed into her ability, and now into her strength.
Etude grinned. Again her arms began to change color. They fed off the night and the gallade’s energy, turning a dark black. The umbreon had a sizeable head start on her. Who would be faster? She would attempt to catch up and enter again into melee, where she could attack with her night slash. Lunging forward, taking two long steps, Etude swung twice, once with each arm.

It seemed her attack worked like a charm. The gallade was lured closer and she was able to get in the hit without it failing. The gallade was thrown backwards and the umbreon felt a surge of satisfaction. Her fangs were exposed as she grinned, a light laugh escaping from her chest as she dashed for the supplies. However, the gallade was again advancing on her. Her eyes widened as she saw the pokemon's arms extend a dark glowing light. What was this? Some sort of dark type move? Pfft, she could take that all day! Cocky, the pokemon didn't slow down. She kept coming and instead of dodging she turned sideways at the last moment to catch the move on her flank. Only to find that it hurt... a lot and it threw her backwards and away from the supplies. What on earth? Why had it hurt so much? That was a dark type move! She should have been able to eat that up!
Sevenclaw found herself lying on the ground, vulnerable and exposed for a moment as she tried to regain her strength. What could she do now? Stupid fighting types with their too strong attacks and stupid arms and-- oh. She had an idea... The umbreon looked over at the gallade and with a taunt in her eyes called out, "Hey, buttercup! what's tall, walks on two legs and is about to take a nap?" Then without hesitation the umbreon opened her mouth in a huge yawn. Then, she grinned at the gallade. "You." She didn't even bother to get up, she just stared at the gallade while her rings began to glow. She was sucking in energy from the moonlight so that she could regain energy for her getaway once the mayor fell asleep.

Etude was ready to win this fight. Powered up with Justified, she had felt the impact of her previous move. And this was just the beginning - her ability would not wear off for quite a while. Plenty of time to seize victory. And the supplies. Also the supplies.
She would wait for the other pokemon to get up; there was no honor or joy in fighting a downed enemy. The umbreon, however, seemed perfectly content to carry out the conversation from the floor. “Very funny.” Etude said, her voice devoid of humor. “Now get up and fight like a-”
The gallade let out a long yawn. It suddenly became very apparent that it was a warm spring night, that she wasn’t asleep, and this was a serious imbalance in the way things were supposed to work. Etude’s legs decided the sand was as good a place to stop as any, and her eyes figured there wasn’t much difference between the dark outside and closing their heavy lids, so they may as well...
